Anniversary ball takes place on Thursday

On 1 December, we celebrate the 103rd anniversary of Estonia's national university. On this occasion, the University of Tartu Student Union once again organises the traditional anniversary ball in the Vanemuine Concert Hall for the students, staff, alumni and guests of the University of Tartu.

The tradition of having a ball to celebrate the anniversary of Estonia's national university goes back many years, though the ball could not take place in the past two Covid years. This year, members and guests of the university can resume this lovely tradition.

"I am very much looking forward to the ball, as I have not yet had the chance to go to the ball during my university years. I cannot wait to see more than five hundred members of the university family sharing the dance floor in Vanemuine. Moreover, I have never been to the Ugala fraternity house, which hosts the afterparty Poslebala," said Siret Siim, Vice President of the Student Union.

On 1 December, the anniversary of the Estonian-language university is also celebrated by the ceremony at the university's assembly hall, where the Contribution to Estonian National Identity award is presented and doctors and honorary doctors are conferred. At 17:00, the torchlight procession starts in front of the academic building at Vanemuine 46.

The festive day will be rounded off with the ball starting at 20:00 in the Vanemuine Concert Hall. The band Estraadiraadio featuring the brilliant Kaire Vilgats and Ott Lepland will help set the mood. Ball guests can have their picture taken in front of the photo wall and take part in a charity raffle to support the university's scholarship fund for Ukrainian students. The programme will also include several surprises. After the ball, an afterparty starts at the Ugala fraternity house. Doors open at 23:00 and the dress code is formal.

Tickets for the ball are sold out.
