On 21 October at 12:30, the Day of Photonics – a key enabling technology – will be celebrated at the Institute of Physics of the University of Tartu (Ravila 14c). During the day, visitors will be able to see interesting demonstrations and experiments related to light and listen to lectures about the research at the Institute of Physics and the activities of Estonian companies in the field.

Today in Lund, Sweden, the foundation stone will be laid for the European Spallation Source (ESS), the superstructure that will be one of the most powerful research centres of the world and will mark the beginning of the new generation research in Europe. This is also significant for the researchers of the University of Tartu, who were the first among all partners to sign a contract to develop equipment for research with neutrons.

New European Marine Board report recommends exploration of sea-submerged settlements abandoned by our ancestors. The report was prepared also by the Senior Research Fellow of Geology Alar Rosentau, Professor of Laboratory Archaeology Aivar Kriiska and academician Tarmo Soomere from the Tallinn University of Technology.

Researchers found that silver nanowires can be made almost indestructible and highly bendable by covering the minuscule wire with silicon dioxide. The new material can be used for making next generation optical cables, which until now have been easily fractured if bent. The new material “memorizes” its original position and regenerates when needed.

Martin Jüssi, master’s student of Geography at the University of Tartu, received a 16 000-euro scholarship from the European Space Agency to pursue master’s studies at the International Space University (ISU) in France. The highly regarded space university located in Strasbourg teaches future leaders of the space sector.

The researchers of the UT Institute of Physics were the first in Estonia to conclude an official agreement for their contribution in the construction of one of the world’s most powerful centres of materials science, the European Spallation Source. The researchers will start developing a device that allows measuring the structure of excited biomolecules by means of extremely short optical impulses at different points of time after their excitation.

The Graphene Flagship announced that today one of the largest-ever European research initiatives is doubling in size. 66 new partners are being invited to join the consortium following the results of a €9 million competitive call. University of Tartu Institute of Physics was chosen to be the only partner for the Flagship in Baltic States. Scientists from the University of Tartu are the first from Baltic States to participate in the project cost of one billion euros.
