University of Tartu (UT) scientists hope create a solution for chronic infections that do not respond to antibiotic treatment after having discovered mechanisms for listening in on sleeping bacteria. Having recently published a research article on the topic in Scientific Reports with his team, Senior Research Fellow in Molecular Microbiology Arvi Jõers writes about the ability of bacteria to listen in on one other and what this discovery means for medicine.

The inaugural lecture by Osamu Shimmi, Professor of Developmental Biology at the University of Tartu, is entitled “Cellular dynamics and signalling in tissue development: lessons from the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster” and will take place at 16:15 on Thursday 17 October in the University Assembly Hall. The lecture will be given in English.

A doctoral thesis defended at the Institute of Chemistry of the University of Tartu has investigated the permeability of drug substances in the gastrointestinal tract using both experimental and cheminformatics methods. The results of the research improve our understanding of how the basic and acidic conditions of the gastrointestinal tract affect the permeability of drug substances.

Last Friday, 4 October, the founding members of the Alliance4Life gathered at Vilnius University to sign a Memorandum of Understanding. Alliance4Life connects 10 leading life science institutions from nine countries in Central and Eastern Europe that have joined the European Union since 2004.

University of Tartu researchers are embarking on an extensive five-year project, during which a Centre of Photonics and Computational Imaging (CPCI) will be established with a €2.5m ERA Chair grant from the European Commission. The new centre will bring together the university’s expertise in photonics and related fields, and will also include a newly formed research group led by a top-level computational imaging researcher. A call for this position has been announced already.

In the 2019 ranking the University of Tartu continues in the 301st–350th band, while the results of European universities in general show a downward trend.

The University of Tartu and Graanul Biotech, which belongs to the Graanul Invest Group, will join forces to create a unique platform for training leading specialists who correspond to companies’ wishes and profiles and for cooperation on product development. According to the cooperation agreement, a doctoral student from the University of Tartu will study the properties of wood-derived lignin in his doctoral thesis and cooperate with Graanul Biotech in order to develop the final commercial product.

The University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science is co-organizing the 27th ACM Joint European Software Engineering Conference and Symposium on the Foundations of Software Engineering (ESEC/FSE). This top conference in the field of Software Engineering will take place in Tallinn from August 26–30.
