On Thursday 1 August at 15:00 p.m., the University of Tartu’s Centre for Entrepreneurship celebrated the completion of the first construction stage. “I am very pleased that construction has so far gone as planned and stayed on schedule,” said Heiki Pagel, Head of the Real Estate Department of the university. “In order to recognise the constructors for achieving the maximum height of the building, we invited the future tenants of the building and all the constructors to the celebration of the completion of the first construction stage.”

On Monday the University of Tartu sent admission decisions to 2,850 people who had applied for Estonian-taught programmes of the first level of higher education. Now they have to confirm acceptance of the student place within two days, i.e. no later than Wednesday, 17 July. Student places that remain vacant will be filled on a rolling basis until 19 August and those who get the admission decision will also need to confirm it within two days.

Today, 20 June, the Accreditation Council for Entrepreneurial and Engaged Universities (ACEEU) awarded the University of Tartu international entrepreneurial university accreditation. In recent years the University of Tartu (UT) has made a conscious effort to advance entrepreneurship studies and establish partnerships with companies and other organisations in order to promote a knowledge-based and innovative society.

Almost 100 representatives from ten research centres and universities from nine Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries met for the fourth time at the Alliance4Life meeting in early June. These partners form a unique community of institutions in the life sciences and medical fields that is unparalleled in the region. The initiator and coordinator of the alliance is CEITEC Masaryk University (MU) from the Czech Republic. The focus of the meeting was to share best practices and receive training from internal and external experts, as well as discuss the future of the alliance.

On June 17–19, the University of Tartu student team, Tartu Team is participating in ISC 2019, one of the biggest student cluster competitions in the world, competing with 14 other teams to design and build a cluster to solve computing problems. This is the third time the University of Tartu has taken part in the event.

On 17-21 June 2019 University of Tartu, Institute of Physics will host the 2nd international conference "Geometric Foundations of Gravity", attended by over 60 theoretical physicists and mathematicians from 20 countries.

On Thursday, 11 April at 14:30, the President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis will deliver a public speech in the Assembly Hall of the University of Tartu. The event is open to everyone. Even though the state visit schedule of the Head of Latvia is tight, he wishes to address the public with a speech „Defending our freedoms – the role of knowledge“. Everyone from university students and employees to the citizens of Tartu and other interested parties is welcome to attend.

Even though the importance of solar and wind energy is ever increasing, we are still dependent on burning fuels in the transportation sector as well as in the production of electricity and heat. The main environmental problem associated with the combustion of fuels is related to the exhaust gases produced in the process.

On 20 March, the board of directors of the European Cyber Security Organisation (ECSO) approved the University of Tartu as a full member of ECSO. The main objective of ECSO is to support all types of initiatives or projects that aim to develop or promote cybersecurity in Europe. In particular, the organisation deals with the following:

UT IdeaLab invites teams with early-stage startup ideas to apply for the NGAL®international business development programme taking place from 2–14 June in Tartu, Tallinn and Charleston, USA. Application deadline is 24 March.

On Friday, 22 February at 12 o'clock, a concert ceremony is held at the university assembly hall to celebrate the 101st anniversary of the Republic of Estonia, award the stipendees of the Ernst Jaakson and Peeter Tulviste memorial scholarships and present the UT's badges of distinction. Ernst Jaakson's memorial scholarship that supports UT PhD students, research fellows and teaching staff abroad is awarded at the concert. Ernst Jaakson's scholarship is the largest known privately funded scholarship to be awarded to students and research fellows.

A new diagnostic method that is most suitable for Estonia was developed at the University of Tartu, which helps detect congenital metabolic disorders earlier and more effectively than before. The new method also helps discover more diseases in newborns with one screening. The newborn screening for congenital metabolic diseases in Estonia was outdated and the 20-year-old system needed updating.

The scientific journal Nature Communications published an article by researchers at the University of Tartu in collaboration with colleagues from Chicago, which helps determine a bottleneck in synthetic biology. Their work shows where to look for the mistake and what to fix in order to assemble a well-functioning ribosome in a lab.

16 subjects taught at University of Tartu have made it to the international university rankings published in late February. This year two new University of Tartu subjects have entered the rankings of consulting firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) – education ranked in the top 251–300 and business and management in the top 401–450.

Prof. Frank Witlox, the Honorary Doctor of Geography of the University of Tartu and the Professor in Geography of the University of Ghent, gives a public lecture on Wednesday, March 6th. The lecture is scheduled at 4 pm and is held in Vanemuise Str 46 Granö lecture hall (room 327).

The opening assembly of the University of Tartu of the Republic of Estonia on 1 December 1919 marked the establishment of an Estonian-language university that was above all designed for Estonian students and to serve Estonian society. The centenary of the national university is celebrated throughout the year with a nation-wide cultural programme, an opinion festival and the largest gathering of alumni to date. The anniversary year draws to a close in December.

On 15 January, the new academic and research building of the Institute of Sport Sciences and Physiotherapy of the University of Tartu and the sports complex extension were officially opened. The total cost of the works exceeded 10 million euros. According to Priit Kaasik, Head of the Institute of Sport Sciences and Physiotherapy, the new building offers improved conditions for teaching physiotherapy and training coaches and physical education teachers. There are also rooms for research.

On 30 November, the University of Tartu became a full member in the EIT Health network of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), and also participates in two new Knowledge and Innovation Communities that were announced on 5 December: EIT Manufacturing and EIT Urban Mobility. EIT funding to the new innovation communities will increase over the next three years from four to 80 million euros per year.
