Public lecture “Why do galaxies rotate?”

The public lecture of the international conference “Metric-Affine Frameworks for Gravity 2022” will be held on Tuesday, 28 June at 18:15 in the Tartu Old Observatory. Prof. Davi Rodrigues will talk on the topic “Why do galaxies rotate?”.

Images of galaxies are well known and are part of popular culture. They show a bright disk with spiral arms that suggest rotation. Astronomical observations confirm the existence of rotation and also indicate large amounts of certain unusual matter. Briefly, I will talk about what is observed, why this unusual (dark) matter seems to be  necessary, how galaxies are expected to be born and what are the consequences of all this “distant” stuff.

Davi Rodrigues is a professor of physics at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (Brazil) since 2010, and member of the Center for Astrophysics and Cosmology. His main research topics are on astrophysics, cosmology and gravitation, with emphasis on dark matter, extended theories of gravity and galaxies.

Everybody is welcome. Entrance is free.
