E-course of the year is “How Artificial Intelligence Can Support Healthcare”, created in cooperation of the University of Tartu, the University of Groningen, the University of Copenhagen and the University Hospital Cologne

On 19 May, the Estonian Quality Agency for Education organised its spring seminar on the quality of e-learning, where good practices in e-learning were shared, authors of courses worthy of the e-course quality label were recognised, and the e-course of the year was announced.

The title of the e-course of the year 2023 went to the e-course “How Artificial Intelligence Can Support Healthcare”, created in cooperation of the University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science, the University of Groningen, the University of Copenhagen and the University Hospital Cologne. The authors of the course are Elena Sügis, Peter Van Ooijen, Daniel Pintos Dos Santos, Rosa Verhoeven and Michael Peter. The title comes with a 2,000-euro scholarship to the authors of the e-course.

The MOOC, created in the FutureLearn online learning environment, offers participants knowledge about using artificial intelligence in healthcare. Learners can join the course any time on https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/how-artificial-intelligence-can-support-healthcare.

The jury found the course to be very well structured and user-friendly, to use varied materials and to engage learners in the learning process through various learning activities. The MOOC includes videos and interviews created by professional filmmakers, with added subtitles to better understand the English text.

“I would like to thank my colleagues, our Estonian experts, the University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science, and especially Mirjam Paales, because she was the one who inspired me to start with the e-course,” said Elena Sügis, Lecturer in Health Informatics at the Institute of Computer Science, on receiving the award.

This year, eight higher education e-courses that were awarded the e-course quality label in the 2023 call for proposals were nominated for the title “E-course of the year”. In addition to six e-courses of the University of Tartu, one course of Tallinn University and one course of Tartu Vocational College were considered for the title.
