From 28 to 30 January 2026, the 10th international business festival Startup Day takes place at the Estonian National Museum in Tartu. The University of Tartu will be present with a diverse and engaging programme.

Researchers at the University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science, Junior Research Fellow of Artificial Intelligence Joonas Ariva and Associate Professor in Artificial Intelligence Dmytro Fishman, together with radiologists from Tartu University Hospital and engineers at Better Medicine, have developed an AI-based tool that accelerates the detection of kidney cancer. Its effectiveness was validated in a study published in Nature Communications Medicine.

On 11 November, the European Institute of Technology and Innovation (EIT) selected the consortium to lead a new Knowledge and Innovation Community in the field of water, marine and maritime sectors and ecosystems (EIT Water). Among the founding partners is the Estonian Marine Institute of the University of Tartu.

On 27 October from 13–18, the University of Tartu development conference “A university for us, Estonia and the world” took place in the university assembly hall and online. Keynote speakers were Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Kersti Kaljulaid and Kristina Kallas.

The work of University of Tartu intersectoral doctoral researcher Eduardo Brito could reshape how we verify truth in the digital world. His research on a decentralised Proof-of-Location system, recently published in Nature Scientific Reports, offers a new way to cryptographically prove where and when something happened, without compromising privacy or relying on centralised authorities.

The company Trigon OÜ has decided to integrate into its accounting software a solution developed during a machine learning course at the University of Tartu’s Institute of Computer Science.
